In this work, I examine Wittgenstein's possible contributions to an elucidation of the grammatical status of certain metaphors – often found in theoretical and speculative texts – which resist an approach based on the assumption of a clear split between the fields of pragmatics and semantics. I take as examples of works that depart from this assumption Elizabeth Camp's Contextualism, Metaphor and What is said (which explores the lines suggested by Paul Grice), and John Searle's Expression and Meaning. Both rely on a distinction between speaker's meaning (utterance meaning) and sentence meaning to explain the nature of metaphor. They assume that the very metaphorical operation involves meaning something instead of saying something. But it is anything but obvious that, when we consider, e.g., the following metaphor of Philosophical Investigations: " A picture held us prisoners " (§115), we can assume that we are facing a non-descriptive use of language. I argue that Wittgenstein himself can provide us with tools to examine a possible descriptive function of this kind of sentence when he develops his grammatical research methods which: a) are not focused on the linguistic dimension of a sentence but on the linguistic dimension of discourse; b) bring up the issue of language learning; c) lead us to ask if certain metaphors could not work as modifiers of convictions, i.e., if they could not act directly on what Wittgenstein once called Weltbild.

In The Transfiguration of the Commonplace, Arthur Danto establishes a theory of metaphor in order to explain how the transfiguration of ordinary objects in works of art is possible. However, he goes even far, claiming that his conception of metaphor provides some important clarifications about the revelation of truths by works of art. In this paper, I consider some problems that arise from Danto’s claim. At the end, I suggest a conception of metaphor that is promising with regard to the elucidation of the relations between truth and art, namely, Paul Ricoeur’s theory of truth, developed in The Rule of Metaphor.

RESUMO: No presente trabalho, procuro mostrar que um esclarecimento prévio acerca do papel da metáfora nas barganhas de significado é elemento imprescindível para a constituição de uma Filosofia da Retórica. Para tanto, recorro ao tratamento precursor conferido por I.A. Richards ao tema da metáfora na obra intitulada The Philosophy of Rhetoric e proponho complementações ao mesmo a partir de uma concepção de aprendizado da linguagem de orientação wittgensteiniana. ABSTRACT: In this work, I aim to show that previous clarification of the role of metaphor in bargaining of meaning is a core element in the make up of philosophy of rhetoric. To acheive this, I refer to the trail-blazing examination performed by I.A.Richards on the theme of metaphor in the work titled The Philosophy of Rhetoric, and I build upon this examination by applying a Wittgensteinian view of language learning.

Resumo: No presente trabalho, examino um certo grupo de metáforas de invenção que encontramos em o Grande Sertão: Veredas, obra máxima de Guimarães Rosa. Meu objetivo é evidenciar um padrão metafórico seguido pelo autor no seu esforço de composição do Riobaldo líder, o Urutú-Branco. Valho-me, para tanto, de uma ferramenta de análise forjada por Lakoff e Johnson em Metaphors We Live By, a saber, a apresentação linguística de metáforas conceituais e de seu papel central no asseguramento da coerência de toda uma rede metafórica. Mostro também como trabalhos recentes em neurolinguística capitaneados pelo grupo da NTL (Neural Theory of Language group), os quais têm procurado corroborar e aperfeiçoar as principais teses da obra seminal de Lakoff e Johnson, vêm sendo aplicados aos fins da estilística e da teoria literária e os limites em que esbarram. Abstract: In this paper, I examine a certain group of metaphors of invention that we find in the Grande Sertão:Veredas, magnum opus of Guimarães Rosa. My aim is to shed light on a metaphorical pattern followed by the author in his composition of Riobaldo as a leader, Urutú-Branco. I make use, therefore, of an analytical tool forged by Lakoff and Johnson in Metaphors We Live By, namely the linguistic presentation of conceptual metaphors and its central role in giving coherence to a whole metaphorical network. I also show how recent work in neurolinguistics captained by the NTL group (Neural Theory of Language group), which has sought to corroborate and to refine the main theses of the seminal work of Lakoff and Johnson, has been applied to the purposes of stylistic and literary theory, as well as the limits of these applications.

In this paper, I introduce the approach to metaphor taken by the Class-Inclusion Model, which has been developed by Sam Glucksberg and Boas Keysar since the 1990s. I look forward to showing their superiority with respect to the comparison view, and I also propose some additions to the model in order to make it more suitable to certain types of metaphor with which we are faced in fictional narratives.

In this work, I deal with the occurrence of proper names in metaphorical propositions or, in a more specific way, I deal with the occurrence of them as expressions of source domains in such propositions. Considering examples extracted from major works of universal literature (Dom Casmurro, Faust and The Magic Mountain), I look for the establishment of clear criteria of distinction between the occurrence of proper names in analogical metaphors and in categorical metaphors (which produce class-inclusions). I assume that this distinction can be very helpful for the elucidation of the peculiar way by which literary metaphors (and not exclusively philosophical and scientific ones) could have ontological commitments. If I am not mistaken in making this claim, its negligence by the Conceptual Metaphor Theory – developed by George Lakoff and his partners in the last decades – appears as one of the reasons for the failure of this theory with regard to the study of certain distinctive and idiosyncratic metaphorical patterns that we find in literary texts.

In this paper, I deal with an inaccuracy in Elizabeth Wolgast’s criticism of Wittgenstein’s last writing On Certainty. In her article “Whether certainty is a form of life”, Wolgast advances the thesis that Wittgenstein contradicts his former assumptions on the nature of meaning when he puts forward and develops the distinction between grammatical and empirical propositions. Opposing her view, I argue that the arguments presented in the Philosophical Investigations and those found in On Certainty work together to elucidate the grammar of common language.

This work has two major targets: a) to expose a failure of the remarks against the possibility of a private language, developed by Wittgenstein between the paragraphs 234 and 316 of Philosophical Investigations, and b) to establish a way of avoiding this failure based on the philosopher’s last writings. I wonder if the view of the expressive use of language, which seems to be sufficient to describe certain uses of words like ‘pain’ and ‘cold’, is also sufficient to describe what is grammatically involved in the use of words whose meanings could not be anchored in any peculiar behavior. This is the case of word ‘consciousness’. I claim that the learning of some uses of such a sign, which is widely used in everyday language and very important for the traditional studies of epistemology and metaphysics, can not be satisfactorily examined departing from the concepts developed by Wittgenstein in Philosophical Investigations. After presenting the difficulty, I try to solve it based on Wittgenstein’s later writings titled posthumously On Certainty, where one can find ideas hitherto unpublished about indubitable propositions in certain language-games and about the possibility of enunciation of such statements.

This monographic work will address as a central subject the spiritual exercises of the desert fathers. Therefore we will review Socrates and the stoic philosophy finding in it the start of the ascetic way. We will understand the relations between the ascetic life and the virtues, vices and sins, the apátheia, ataraxia and happiness (eudaimonia). At the end we will attend at some of the exercises in specific way.

A partir da tese de que Shakespeare teria tido por influência na
composição da tragédia
Hamlet o estoicismo de Sêneca, O Príncipe de Maquiavel e o ceticismo de Montaigne,
procuraremos no presente trabalho reconhecer alguns exemplos de passagens na peça
em que tais influências são evidenciadas. Procuraremos também destacar as passagens
nas quais é corroborada a tese de que Shakespeare já concebia a obra de arte como um
espelho, no qual o intérprete vê a si mesmo.

No presente trabalho analisaremos o trecho do diálogo Fedro, de Platão, que vai de 257c até 274c. Nele Platão trata da relação entre dialética e retórica. A questão central é saber se a retórica poderia prescindir da dialética. Para tanto, se faz necessário examinar a abrangência de cada uma dessas duas atividades, se idêntica, distinta, complementar (em que medida), subsumindo ou subsumida na outra. A problemática, daí decorrente implica saber, por exemplo, se a retórica deve-se fundar tão somente como instrumento de persuasão, sem fazer considerações sobre os fins ou resultados práticos dos discursos, bem como, se a verdade, sem o auxílio da retórica, teria força persuasiva suficiente para ser reconhecida com tal.

No presente trabalho procurarei fazer uma apresentação, em linhas gerais, da crítica nietzschiana à linguagem e à consciência. Terei como referências principais os textos Sobre Verdade e Mentira no Sentido Extramoral e o aforismo 354 de A Gaia Ciência. Procurarei também mostrar como essas duas críticas se articulam entre si e como contribuem para uma nova concepção, proposta por Nietzsche, de eu, corpo e alma, ou seja, uma nova concepção de subjetividade.

Este trabalho situa-se na confluência entre conhecimento, educação escolar, ensino de Sociologia e interculturalidade, um diálogo pouco explorado pela pesquisa educacional brasileira. Tendo como referenciais os estudos interculturais de Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Vera Maria Candau e Antônio Flávio Moreira, busca-se discutir como os professores de Sociologia lotados na escola básica compreendem as possibilidades de debates entre o saber sociológico escolar e a educação intercultural. Neste empreendimento, dois objetivos são visados: (1) identificar as representações de professores de Sociologia de escolas públicas de Niterói sobre as relações entre o conhecimento sociológico escolar vigente na escola básica brasileira e a proposta da educação intercultural e a (2) problematizar possibilidades de construção de currículos escolares sociológicos interculturalmente orientados no contexto de escolas da rede pública. Para tanto, foram desenvolvidas entrevistas individuais semiestruturadas com onze sujeitos licenciados em Ciências Sociais e atuantes no magistério estadual de Sociologia há pelo menos dois anos. Foram também analisados documentos curriculares oficiais voltados ao ensino médio e à disciplina de Sociologia. Mediante a articulação entre os dados obtidos através desses procedimentos e os referenciais teórico-conceituais enunciados, foi possível obter significativos achados. A despeito de diversas proposições favoráveis à educação intercultural nos documentos curriculares analisados, esta ainda é escassamente promovida na seleção de conteúdos e no desenvolvimento de práticas pedagógicas no ensino básico de Sociologia, conforme relatam os sujeitos da pesquisa. Nesse cenário, a construção intercultural do conhecimento sociológico escolar é uma meta a se cumprir, repleta de desafios a serem enfrentados pelo sistema escolar e os educadores.
